"There is no proof to back up this claim from Google directly except for Google stating that source code of any size is permissible and as long as it does not interfere with user interaction it will not hurt your SEO

however we've never seen a website traffic or ranking get disrupted due to source code change, and there has never been a claim made in Google as of May, 2017. In addition Google has gotten very good at distinguishing between what is actual text and what is source code, and it ignores the source code from considering it as relevant content for ranking."
